The Do Not Enter Diaries: Tatiyana J.
When Tatiyana was younger, her mom always told her to focus on activities that would get her away from her neighborhood. But, if anything, Tatiyana incorporates projects back into her home and helps fuse them into her space. Whether it’s African fabrics or her beanie babies collection that circumscribes her ceiling molding, both her immediate and neighborly communities find a home in her room. The most noticeable presence of Tatiyana’s interests is the plants that grow by her windowsill, waiting to transported to the once-empty play lot that Tatiyana, all on her own accord, turned into a flourishing garden down the block from her home in Harlem, New York. But, as she describes in her video, “I feel like I just relax in here. I am in the zone. Out of that zone.” At the end of the day, Tatiyana’s room is more than just about the latest project she’s taken on. It’s a fortress for hanging back, and unabashedly wiping eyeliner on the walls from time to time.
